Coombs Rodeo Aug 2017For the years that we were in Parksville with the kids (about 16 years all told and about 20 years ago) Coombs had an annual rodeo. It petered out for some reason. In the last 3 years they have revived the rodeo, calling it a "Western Heritage" event, but naming it "Broncs, Bulls and Barrels". This year we went and enjoyed the entire afternoon.
They had the Bronc riding, Bull riding and Barrel racing (for new beginners age 5-8 - how cute, and the old pros as well).
There were cowboys from all over, including a trio from Australia (up in the north), as well as a few Americans and of course, Canada was well represented. Aside from one poor Aussie who rode a bronc into the side rail fencing and hit his head on the top rail (looked quite bad but he walked off) and a young fellow who couldn't control his horse in the novice barrel race (fell off and the horse stepped on him) the event was quite enjoyable for all. We'll certainly make it a date for next year. If I can only persuade them to include "break-away roping" it would be perfect.
