Old Naval tradition stipulates that due subservience must be shown to King Neptune by all who are crossing the equator for the first time.
Our ship was not to be omitted in the practice and they held the "crossing the line" ceremony at 4 bells of the afternoon watch (2:00pm for you non-naval types).
One of the junior Bridge staff - a junior mate - was crossing for the first time ... and of course was the brunt of the majority of the indignities. He took it all in good humour though, something that would endear him to the remainder of the crew I'm sure.

Having been though the real "Naval" version of this process, I can attest quite strongly that this occasion was a rather tame event, in spite of how it may look.
