Valparaiso is the largest major seaport on the Pacific coast of South America. Santiago is the capital of Chile and in spite of its very rough history (Allende election, Pinoche dictatorship etc) has maintained most of it's old world charm.
The bus from Valparaiso to Santiago takes nearly 2 hours, but whichever way you go, both places are special and should be visited when in the area.
