The original site of an old trading village from the time of the Manta and Inca Indians (pre-Columbian). It is now one of the most important coastal towns in Ecuador, main industry being fishing for Tuna. The fleet provides the catch for many processing plants around the world.
The town of Montecristi (about 15 min from Manta is the actual place where most of the best Panama hats are made (they're not made in Panama) - and still made completely by hand mostly as a cottage industry.
